“Two Heads Are Better Than One”: A Glaring Case of Mr. P and Rudeboy

It is not a fad! The Psquare split is not a staged move… it has been in effect far too long for it to be one. It will, however, be the most expensive Nigerian music publicity stunt if it turns out to be one.

You ask why?

PETER: Since announcing their split in September 2017, Peter aka Mr P has released three singles; ‘Cool It Down’, ‘For My Head’ and ‘My Way’ – all three singles have official music videos.

PAUL: In six months, Paul aka Rudeboy has equally released three singles; ‘Nkenji Keke’, ‘Fire Fire’ and most recently ‘Somebody Baby’. Two out of these also have official music videos.

It costs no less than two million naira to shoot a decent music video in Nigeria today. Do the math; the brothers have spent quite a fortune on their respective careers since parting ways. The big question however is; What fruits have their solo journey yielded so far?
While the brothers are having an obvious solo crawl, Paul seems to be having the least traction. Upon the announcement of their split, everyone was pretty sure Paul was the go-to guy whenever the need is an impressive vocal flex. Through the fiasco(s) leading up to the split, fans were made to know that Paul has been the famous Psquare voice that everyone interacted with. He is brain and voice behind the group.

His superpowers have however failed to come through for him as he his yet to make a hit score. None of his singles has registered in the hearts of the fans and he has merely headlined any major show since the split.

Peter, on the other hand, was barely a songwriter or vocalist but his infectious energy, charisma, and skill as a dancer made him responsible for the eccentric representation of the Psquare brand. He’s always been a screen god and the life of the party. This advantage has helped him attain a seemingly more successful solo career.

His debut single; Cool it Down has amassed over 2.5 million views on Youtube and his second single ‘For my Head’ rose to the status of a minor hit.

While Peter is having a pretty decent run and shows more promise, it is important to note that their impact as solo artistes hasn’t match the weight of their achievements as a duo.

Split or not, Psquare is and arguably the biggest African pop music group of all time but the struggling of upcoming artistes is what the brothers are battling as solo singers. Peter is still in obvious need of Paul’s lyrical expertise as much as Paul is need of Peter’s aura and overall creative inputs.

The solo journey Of Mr. P And Rudeboy validates the popular saying that goes; two heads are better than one.
